Japanese authorities are operating on the presumption that possible meltdowns are under way at two nuclear reactors, a government official said Sunday, adding that there have been no indications yet of hazardous emissions of radioactive material into the atmosphere.
Citace :
Later Sunday, a spokesman for Japan's prime minister repeated that assertion and said he would not describe what was occurring in the reactors as a "meltdown". "The situation is under control. ....We have been succeeding in lowering pressure inside the containment vessel," spokesman Noriyuki Shikata said.

Mr Goto calculated that because Reactor No 3 at Fukushima-Daiichi - where pressure is rising and there is a risk of an explosion - used a type of fuel known as Mox, a mixture of plutonium oxide and uranium oxide, the radioactive fallout from any meltdown might be twice as bad.

More on the Tokai nuclear power plant: A report submitted to the Ibaraki prefectural government by the Japan Atomic Power Company said that one of the two pumps being used to cool the water of a suppression pool for the plant's nuclear reactor had stopped working, according to the Kyodo news agency. However, the other pump was still working and there was no problem with cooling the reactor, the prefectural government said. All control rods were set in completely at the reactor, it added.

21:11: A former adviser on radiation to the UK government, Dr Christopher Busby, has told the BBC the situation at the nuclear plants is extremely serious. "Particularly concerning is the [Fukushima] number three reactor which I understand is in trouble now, because it runs on a different sort of fuel; it doesn't run on uranium, it runs on a mixed uranium plutonium fuel, and plutonium is an extremely serious hazard so if this stuff comes out then it's going to make what's happened so far, in terms of the tsunami damage, look a little bit like an entrée to the real course."

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan was some 160km offshore when its instruments detected the radiation in a plume of smoke and steam released from the crippled plant. But officials said the dose of radiation was about the same as one month's normal exposure to natural background radiation in the environment.

The ship was operating about 100 miles northeast of the power plant when the "airborne radioactivity" was detected, the Navy said.
