Francouzské letectvo upřednostnilo oba konkurenty a ostatní projekty ukončilo. | Nieuport proposed a completely new aircraft, a low-wing monoplane configuration with retractable landing gear and closed cockpit. They initially designated thew fighter as LN.60, but this designation was already given to a flying boat and they renamed it CAO.200. The big difference in the names is explained by the fact that in 1936 Nieuport became part of concern Societe Nationale de Constructions Aeronautiques de l'Ouest (SNCAO). For French engineers it was necessary to finish the project - in the final form CAO.200 obtained the 860-hp strong engine Hispano-Suiza 12Y-31, increased tail area assembly and small fins on the stabilizers. The prototype for the first time rose into air on 31 January, 1939, - later than its basic competitor Dewoitine D.520. Both prototypes comparatively smoothly passed the trials for three months and they were approximately equal from the basic parameters, but for the series production the D.520 was chosen. During September 1939, the French air force concentrated on Dewoitine's aircraft, which it was intended to replace those recently accepted for the series production D.520 and Bloch MB.152. The remaining competitors were discontinued and so remained at the level of prototypes. To firm Nieuport, nevertheless, was given an order for 12 pre-series aircraft. In all likelihood, the air force did not feed the hopes for rapid introduction of the promising fighters into service and thus felt the necessity to accept the fighter CAO.200 as provisional measure. Production aircraft in essence were characterized by engine Hispano-Suiza 12Y-51 and some modifications in the construction, but in practice none of them was released by reason that it passed the capitulation of France. During May 1940, the fighter equipped the squadron GC I/145 "Warsawa", in which Polish pilots served. As far as CAO.200 is concerned, this aircraft also under field conditions had no prettier life. According to some data the squadron commander of GC I/145 (and simultaneously chief pilot of SNCAO), M. Demazieres, brought down on 5 May, 1940, a Heinkel He 111 bomber. Judging by everything this it was CAO.200's first and last combat mission. In autumn of the same year Germans confiscated the prototype and exported it to Germany for tests, after their completion it was scrapped. |
