První prototyp (BF-1) verze F-35B (STOVL) udělal dva významné kroky ve zkušebním programu.
Zkušení pilot Graham Tomlinson 17.03.2010 poprvé převedl letoun do visu ve výšce 50 m nad dráhou NAS Patuxent River, Maryland.
Při dalším letu provedl zkrácený vzlet s rozjezdem 300 m při rychlosti 185 km/h.

F-35B completes first hover test
Lockheed Martin has registered two more key test points for the F-35B short take-off and vertical landing version of the Joint Strike Fighter.
Test pilot Graham Tomlinson first decelerated the BF-1 test aircraft to a hover about 150ft (50 m) above the runway at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland on 17 March. Then, on a separate flight later the same day, the aircraft was rotated on take-off in less than 300m and a speed of 100kt (185 km/h).
